Shockwave Therapy
Certain conditions, particularly involving the tendons, are notoriously difficult to address and resolve. Shockwave therapy can offer an effective solution for conditions such as:
ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY
JUMPER’S KNEE
RUNNER’S KNEE
SHOULDER TENDINOPATHY
TENNIS ELBOW
PLANTAR FASCIOPATHY
LATERAL HIP PAIN
TENDON CALCIFICATIONS
MEDIAL TIBIAL STRESS SYNDROME (“SHIN SPLINTS”)
How Shockwave Therapy Helps
This therapy uses high-pressure, acoustic shockwaves, sending them through the skin to stimulate healing and pain relief. The small “shocks” produced create a microtrauma that the tissues then seek to address, promoting tissue healing and regeneration.
Research projects investigating shockwave therapy initially looked at the treatment of plantar fasciitis, which has shown positive results. There are now more and more studies investigating shockwave therapy as a treatment for patella and Achilles tendinopathy, as well as tendinopathies and related issues around the shoulder, hip and elbow. Standard protocols for treatment have been developed over many years of research, and the physiotherapists at Rivervale Physiotherapy are able to follow these protocols, but also modify them specifically for your presentation.
What Treatment Involves
At Duncraig Physiotherapy, we generally recommend a standard protocol of 6 sessions, with 2 sessions in the first week followed by one session per week until the treatment is concluded. Hands-on therapies and exercise will also be recommended, as shockwave therapy is much more effective when combined as an adjunct to strengthening muscles and improving joint mobility.
